Dear Friends:

We arrived in Lima on the evening of January 4th, pushed our luggage across the street to the airport hotel, had a late snack, and retired early. We met our tour leaders in the morning, as well as the rest of our tour group, 19 Americans and 2 Brits. It felt really good to reconnect with Cherie and Austin, who we met in Egypt on our Egypt/Nile trip.

We flew to Iquitos, the largest Peruvian city not accessible by road. It is a 6 day barge trip or 2.5 hour flight. We chose the latter. Honda is the largest employer; they make 3-wheeled taxis (known as tuk-

tuks) that are sold throughout Peru and in adjoining countries.

From Iquitos, we loaded onto a bus for the 60 mile 2.25 hour ride to Nauta, where our "Floatel" the Delfin II was waiting. Our room were spacious and the sunset, the only one of our trip, was spectacular.

Our primary focus has been the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, located at the confluence of the Maranon and Ucayali Rivers. All of the time we were about 3 degrees from the equator. Here there are many different species, but not many of each one. Our guides were unfailingly able to identify and describe each one.

A word about the pictures: most were taken from far away, with a lens I could carry, but one not quite long enough to get crisp pictures of far-off wildlife.

First, scenes from life along the Amazon.

Lots of scary insects; we learned that red meant "danger."

There were so many birds that choosing what to include was quite difficult. Ultimately I have included: a Crème-colored woodpecker, scarlet macaws, a ferruginous pygmy-owl, a muscovy duck, a great egret, a chestnut-eared aracari, a wattled jacana, a bluish-fronted jacamar, a striated heron, a cocoi heron, a black-collared hawk, and a ringed kingfisher.

A surprise for us were the pink and grey dolphins that played around the mouth of each tributary, waiting for the fish to come through.

Today we return to Lima, and tomorrow we fly to Arequipa, the start of our mountain adventure.

Stay well.

Marc
